Treatment for Children

The Canadian Dental Association has recently changed their thoughts about when a child should first see the dentist.  Once your child's first tooth has entered his or her mouth, an information appointment  should be made.  Nutrition, oral hygiene, baby bottle caries and facts about toothpastes are some of the topics to be discussed at this early stage.

At about age 2 1/2 , your child should start coming to the dentist. Initially observing at a parent's appointment, and then slowly progressing to being on his or her own.

Did You Know....

That it's harder to keep your teeth white as you grow older?  That's because plaque can build up faster and dentin (the bone like tissue under the tooth enamel) darkens as you age.

Are you nervous?

If in office visits make you nervous, follow these tips;

For most people, a visit to our office is nothing out of the ordinary, and certainly nothing to be nervous about.  But we know that some patients have a fear of dental procedures, and we would like to help with some tips for a more relaxing visit.

Tell us about your concerns.  Whether you call in advance or speak to us when you arrive, we will take the time to listen and make sure your concerns are addressed.

Use visualization to remove yourself from your fears during the procedure.  Picture yourself somewhere relaxing (like a warm, sandy beach) and imagine how great it would feel to be there.

Bring along some soothing music to enjoy.  The right music can have a very calming effect and make time pass more easily for you.

Avoid stimulants such as coffee and some cold medications.  They can add to your anxiety by making you edgy and more nervous.

A lot of fears are based on old ideas and myths.  The truth is that there is little, if any, discomfort associated with today's most common dental procedures.  And modern anaesthetics and techniques help reduce or eliminate pain in more involved treatments. If you let us know about your fears, we can help make your next visit a more comfortable and pleasant experience.
